Pterospora andromeda. Pinedrops. I was at our family cabin in Idaho over the weekend and spotted these growing in the forest understory everywhere around the cabin. The plant is just a two- to three-foot leafless red stalk, covered with these pendulous golden bell-shaped flowers. The plant makes no chlorophyll and gets its nutrients through mycorrhizal associations with with the surrounding plants and lodgepole pine.
